Description
Jiaogulan is a flowering vine in the Cucurbitaceae family, more commonly known as the gourd family, which makes it related to zucchini, pumpkin, cucumber and squash. Jiaogulan powder made from the dried leaf is added to cooked foods, smoothies, herbal tea blends and tonics. Topically, jiaogulan powder is incorporated into soaps, lotions and other cosmetic preparations. Jiaogulan is a climbing, herbaceous vine in the cucumber family found throughout South Asia. The plant has a long history of use in China, where it is known as the “immortality herb,” largely because of the frequent use among the elderly population in the Guizhou Province. Powdered jiaogulan, designated as a novel food by the European Union, is used in tea blends, smoothies and tonics, seasoning blends, and is encapsulated as a dietary supplement. Jiaogulan powder is also used in cosmetic formulations designed to deter aging. The herb is also used in holistic veterinary medicine to support the immune, respiratory and circulatory systems in horses.
