Beet Root (Beta vulgaris)

Description

Beet root refers to the taproot of the garden variety of red beet, so-named because of its deep russet color. When powdered, beet root has a variety of uses as a food product and coloring agent. Combined with arrowroot to control color tone and enhance application, it can even be used to make homemade facial blusher. Add to beet root powder blushers and lip balms, adjusting the amount necessary to achieve the desired tint. Stir or whip beet root powder into yogurt, smoothies and other foods for added nutrition and color. The powder can also be added to juice or tea. Beet root powder can be encapsulated as a dietary supplement. As a supplement, beet root may reduce the effectiveness of cholesterol-reducing drugs. Check with your physician before using if you have a history of kidney stones due to the presence of oxaluric acid.
